The Sunday Salon: Odds and Ends

by Rachel Baker on November 10, 2008

Sunday SalonIt appears, I’m on a completely different time table than the rest of you – at least that’s the way I’m going to look it, since I can’t seem to get the Sunday Salon written on Sunday. It’s not that I’m slacking, its just that in the last few weeks, I seem to be a day later than the rest of the world. My birthday was three weeks ago…and I’ve been completely off since then. I am going to blame this lapse of time on the aging process – feel free to use this excuse if you deem necessary.

What I’m trying to say in a really strange round about way is my apologies for being late with the Sunday Salon. I’m not really sure I have a whole lot to share right now. Instead I’m just going to put a few odds and ends together.

1. For this one, you will want to turn on your volume. Its my pleasure to draw your attention to Tricia Dowers Silent Girl video. I’m so proud of Tricia. Tricia is one of those authors who is taking technology by the horns and doing it beautifully. There is a special place in my heart for independent authors who use every possible way available to publicize their books. Without further ado,

2. I just finished The Monsters by Dorothy Hoobler and Thomas Hoobler. Very interesting book. Without giving away a review yet, I was completely surprised at the amount of tragedy Mary Shelley had to deal with in her life.

3. I also finished The Shack by William P. Young. Fascinating book! Here’s a hint – God is a rather large black woman with a fantastic sense of humor – think Big Momma.

4. The Miami Book Fair International is in full swing this week – in Miami (of course). There are great events on the schedule. Remember that book Going Down South by Bonnie Glover I talked about during one of my Sunday Salons? Well, she’s going to be speaking Saturday, November 15 @ 4:30, Wolfson Bldg, Room 7114. If you are in the area, I urge you to go check out this Book Fair and plan on spending some time with Mrs. Glover.

5. Let’s talk about Book Giveaways for a second. First…Hachette Book Group ROCKS!

  • Crystal Adkins and the King of Siam were the winners of the Election Day giveaway. Interestingly, they are the only two that predicted an Obama win. And, impressively, King of Siam was incredibly close to the actual mark.
  • There’s a new giveaway for November. The contest will end at midnight on November 21st 2008. All you have to do is comment on the post with your favorite meal scene from any book or movie, OR your favorite thanksgiving meal memory.
  • There will be a contest in December – with a set of Christmas books, a set of Hanukkah Books and/or a set of Kwanzaa books. Stay tuned. I’m not really sure what the “requirements” for the contest will be, but stay tuned!

6. And last, but no where near least important…from the Michael Crichton website

In Memoriam
Michael Crichton
1942 – 2008

Best-selling author Michael Crichton died unexpectedly in Los Angeles Tuesday, November 4, 2008 after a courageous and private battle against cancer.

While the world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us — and entertained us all while doing so — his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes. He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.

Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand.

He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves behind the greatest gifts of a thirst for knowledge, the desire to understand, and the wisdom to use our minds to better our world.
