George R. R. Martin Apparently Doesn’t Understand the Significance of Fandom on his Wallet

by Rachel Baker on July 9, 2014

There’s been a lot of stories this morning about what George R. R. Martin said in an interview with a Dutch news outlet. Don’t mistakenly think this commentary is just journalists putting words in Martin’s mouth – he says it; and just to drive the point home, he extends his middle finger up to the camera when he says it. Talk about a classy dude; makes me truly sorry that I ever spent money on his books.

At the link below, there is a video in the right hand column that has the full interview. Its interesting – particularly when he says he only writes at home, never anywhere else – not when he travels, in the car, on the train, in a plane. He also says he reads Tolkien every three or four years; and that ladies and gents explains why he writes so slow. Frankly, he sort of comes across as an incredibly pompous ass who doesn’t understand his responsibility to the fans who buy his books and thusly, pays his bills.

Don’t hold your breath for a completion in the Song of Ice and Fire. Let’s face it, at the rate that George R. R. Martin is writing, the definitive ending to the series will probably be written by the group who are writing the HBO series; for no other reason than HBO won’t wait for too many years to wrap up their series…that would be a very bad business decision on their part.

During an interview with Swiss daily newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, George R. R. Martin (65) expressed his anger about people who speculate about his health and death. “I find that question pretty offensive. So Fuck You to those people,” said the bestselling author who still has to write two more books of his epic tale.
