This is less a personal memoir and more of a biography of Steve Martin’s “Wild and Crazy Guy” act. Everything he mentions in this book is directly related to the development of his act or is a step that propelled his career forward. If he mentions a relationship, it may be because that ex-girlfriend later helped him get a job. If he mentions a former writing or performing colleague, it may be because that person inspired or directly influenced an aspect of his comic persona or gave him a joke he used later. He faithfully chronicles all the major steps in his ten year march to overnight success. It’s a unique look at the early career of a major star.
